What can I do during my bachelor?

What options does a student have, after completing a bachelor's degree?

There are three options: to continue studying, taking a “first level” master or a full master’s degree, or to find a job. It should be clarified that the bachelor’s degree in computer and communication engineering has two possible specializations, one in computer science and the other in telecommunications. Thus, in the final year, the student can choose one of the two; one is more strictly related to computer science, i.e. to software, with its integrations and applications, or to hardware, the other is more oriented to telecommunications.

What kind of work can a bachelor's degree student with a specialization in computer science find?

A student who has completed his/her bachelor degree is set for a job in software design and development, which therefore includes the application of all the basic skills on computer architecture, software systems architecture, programming. He or she will work in software development companies or in companies in any industry that have an “IT,” Information Technology, department, that is, that deal with information technology. The choice is quite critical because in one case the primary activity is to develop the company’s main product, while in the other case it is to do management, support, and design of computer systems within companies that do something else.

What kind of work can a bachelor's degree student with a specialization in telecommunications find?

For those doing the specialization in telecommunications orientation, it is more common to work on mixed systems, hardware and software, also making smart sensors and data collection devices with their respective management and telecommunications software.

What kind of support does the Politecnico give for the job search?

There is an office, which is called “Career Service”, dedicated to this; it is an independent structure that keeps the relations with companies, providing services ranging from guidance to support for internships to the possibility of posting one’s resumé to find a job. Another thing the career service does every year is to organize so-called “career days”,which are days when companies physically meet interested potential candidates at the Politecnico in a kind of “fair”. A student can find all the information and carry out all the procedures online, via the website.

What master's degree can a bachelor's graduate enroll to?

Given the two specializations in the final year of the bachelor’s degree, in computer engineering or telecommunications, the natural path goes to the master’s degree in computer engineering on the one hand or telecommunications engineering on the other. But these are not the only possible paths, in the sense that in any case the computer engineer is first and foremost an engineer, who has all the basic skills to be able to go in other directions as well, both educational and professional.

What other study possibilities are there?

There is another possibility at the end of the third year: the “first level” masters, courses lasting about one year that give a title not of master’s degree but, indeed, of master’s degree. They try to give practical operability and fundamentals to enter the world of work in a better prepared manner. They are suitable for those who, after the bachelor’s degree, in which they have received the fundamentals of engineering bases, wish to acquire a specialization, such as in “data science”, for example. Masters of this type are post-graduate masters from the Politecnico, delivered by partner institutions, such as CEFRIEL and POLIMI Graduate School of Management (formerly MIP). They are organized in such a way that they can also be followed by those who already work.
